Mat had always been a fighter. Always, since childhood, since the first time some shithead kid had tried to pick on him for having the wrong Ninja Turtle on his backpack. And he’d never stopped.

Now, he was a killer. A fighting dog. As vicious and mindless as Allen had promised he’d be.

He measured his time from one fight to the next. He put on a good show and raked in big hauls, so Allen threw him in that pit twice a month, sometimes for one match, on the bad nights for two. A grueling fucking schedule, but what other choice did Mat have? He entered the ring, faced the other man or sometimes men—he didn’t know where Allen got them from, and he didn’t ask, though he heard rumors of disposable slaves from the meat markets and free men who’d crossed Allen one way or another—and got it over with. Sometimes it was easy, or at least, the other man didn’t put up much of a fight. Sometimes Mat only survived by the skin of his teeth. He made it fast when he could, Allen’s Make it look good, Dog be damned. Tried not to make people suffer. Snapped necks and bashed heads in and crushed throats. Stopped asking their names—he couldn’t handle the weight of it, he couldn’t, not if he wanted to live—but never stopped counting their deaths. Twelve so far. Twelve souls, maybe innocent, maybe guilty, but none deserving the end they found. All for Dougie.

After the fights, he’d be brought up to Allen’s room, still covered in blood and gore and sand, and Allen would fuck him with his cock or toys or fists or sometimes all three, as brutal and as merciless the arena fights themselves—except worse because Mat couldn’t fight back. And every time, after Allen was finished, he’d tell Mat to keep his mouth shut, to let no one know that Allen had emptied a load inside him or gotten it up for a man in the first place . . . or else.

He didn’t need to elaborate on the threat, because Mat already knew.

Or else he’d hurt Dougie.

So much for Nikolai’s advice to pretend Dougie meant nothing to him. Especially when Allen calling his bluff could mean Dougie’s life.

At least outside of the fights Allen mostly ignored him. Had lost interest in him, or maybe just wanted to keep him fighting fit and so didn’t get up to his usual tortures. Mat was bringing in heaps of cash, now. Allen could find someone less useful to whip bloody.

In between, Mat plotted escape. Nothing else mattered, not anymore. He’d have killed himself after that first fight if he’d thought it would change anything, but he knew better. The men Allen threw in the ring with him would end up dead anyway, and Dougie would be lost forever, or worse, just another dog in a bloody fight. And if Mat couldn’t escape by dying, then he had to get off the island. Somehow.

But Allen kept him under tight supervision.
